Aston Old Edwardians
The Aston Edwardian Association (AEA) is a sports and social club which seeks to enable former students at Aston maintain contact with their old school, as well as to enjoy its wide range of sporting and social activities. The AEA started life in 1889 as the Aston Old Edwardians Rugby Football Club. A cricket club was formed in 1912 and, later, a golf society. Much more recently, squash, association football and social sections have been added. Its headquarters is located at the Memorial Ground, Sunnybank Avenue, Perry Common which was opened in 1927. In 2010 its sporting facilities received a major upgrade.
For reasons that are well known to all, AEA became an ‘open’ club progressively during the 1960s and now seeks to provide facilities to the local community as well as the school’s ‘old boys’. The Association’s charitable efforts are channelled through the ‘Sid’ Brown Trust which it established in memory of one of its former members who died, aged thirty-two, in 1991. The Trust aims to assist deserving young sportsmen and women of all standards. Since 1993 it has made fifty-nine grants totalling over £14,000 to support a diverse range of sports including rugby, soccer, judo, athletics, riding, archery, orienteering and golf. In 2005 the Trust made its first overseas award, to assist with junior rugby in South Africa. The Trust has arranged to make annual bursary awards to Aston school pupils from 2011.
Recognising that ‘seas may soon divide’ Aston's 'sons', the AEA produces a biannual newsletter, The Astonian, which circulates widely throughout the world. Another means by which members (and, in this case, non-members) are encouraged to keep in touch is the Commemoration and Reunion Dinner which is held every November at the school.
Former pupils, Aston Old Edwardians, are invited and encouraged to take up one of the five classes of membership open to them by writing to the Membership Secretary c/o AEA, Memorial Ground, Sunnybank Avenue, BIRMINGHAM B44 0HP. A sixth category, ‘Lapsed’, is available to those who ‘forget’ to pay their annual subscription! It is possible to keep abreast of current and future events at the Association through its website, and to contact us via email.
Please join us and keep in touch with those old friends from your schooldays – and many new ones too.
