PE (Academic)

The importance of regular physical education and sporting opportunity is recognised at Aston. The PE curriculum provides opportunity for all pupils to develop mentally, physically and socially. Students grow in confidence, acquire leadership skills and learn lifelong healthy lifestyles and habits. The PE department aims to ensure all students enjoy a range of physical activities and provide opportunity for all students of all abilities to represent the school in a variety of competitive sports.

We want all students to enjoy and succeed in participating in physical activity. In a subject such as PE that success is dependent upon students’ own abilities, personalities, motivation and passion. Through experiencing a wide range of physical activities it is hoped that students will find an activity that they will hopefully continue to participate in regularly when they have left Aston – a ‘life sport.’ Students in PE and games will have developed the skills of perseverance, reflection, teamwork, communication and sport specific skills. Most importantly, they will have the confidence to go into other environments after Aston and thrive.

A level PE

PE A level

What this course is about?

A-level PE is not a softer subject! It combines science, humanities and practical ability. A combination not needed in other subjects. It is a broad and detailed look into the science of sport and how and why sport exists. We will study how we react in pressure situations and deal with emotions such as anger and anxiety. We also look at how we learn; how did you learn and develop that skill? From the basics of learning to walk - to the more challenging learning to juggle. A – Level PE is a challenging look into the quickest growing industry where your theoretical knowledge will be pushed and your practical ability challenged.

This course suits individuals who wish to learn more about the academic side of sport. A real true enjoyment of sport and the ability to come up with sporting examples is essential. This is not a “playing subject”, yes there will be practical activities that you are expected to take part in, but this is a written assessment, based on knowledge you will earn in a classroom environment.

Where can this subject take you?

A-level PE will enable you firstly to look into the growing sports industry, which remains one of the quickest growing industries in the UK. This could mean working in management, development, or therapy. It is also an excellent subject to move towards other careers such as physiotherapy, or careers in the armed forces. It can also be used as a third subject towards other careers, it shows breadth to your abilities as it combines science and humanities subjects alongside the need for a strong practical grounding.
